In early 2020, Maurice was planning to record the follow-up to 2019's "Pear in the Finish" just as the pandemic hit, forcing their plans to be set aside. For a band accustomed to rehearsing and performing in a room together, facing lockdown meant finding new ways to play, both literally and figuratively. As circumstances dictated a new way of working, the band began to create something entirely new.
Operating as more of a collective of musician-composers, the band tapped members from its 13 year history to record various fragments in an expanding game of musical relay. Grooves and motifs were passed around and as impulses arose, musical spaces were filled. Free from any preconceived expectations and the limitations of geography, songs began to reveal themselves layer by layer, and a completely different record began to emerge.
"Playtime" demonstrates how unexpected and unwelcome circumstances can lead to unexpected and welcome results. It is a testament to finding optimism in the face of uncertainty and how important it is to never stop playing.
